Spinal Cord Injury: Overview, associated complications
and implications for seating and assistive technology
21 October 2021
14:00 - 15:30 (
GMT+1)

It is estimated that globally, between 250,000 to 500,000 people sustain a spinal cord injury each year. These clients are at high risk of developing associated complications e.g. pressure sores and contracture development. The wheeled mobility device and seating set up recommended for these individuals plays a role in managing and preventing some of these complications. For some clients with tetraplegia, assistive technology is an essential tool to facilitate increased functional independence. This presentation aims to go back to basics with respect to spinal cord injury and some of the specific considerations for clinicians working with these individuals whether it be in the acute, sub-acute or long-term phase of the injury.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Describe the ASIA Impairment scale and its’ significance with respect to the potential seating and assistive technology needs of clients with SCI.

  2. Name and describe three complications associated with spinal cord injuries and how these complications may impact on their seating and assistive technology needs.

  3. Identify three considerations for seating product parameter selection that are relevant to clients with spinal cord injuries.

  4. Outline two means of alternative drive controls which may be appropriate for clients with cervical level spinal cord injuries.
